Whether you are downsizing because your kids have left home and you no longer need the space or you are longing for less square footage and less house to take care of, downsizing can be a daunting task no matter what. It likely took years to accumulate all of the “things” you have in your home so it will take time to go through and decide what to do with everything you own. Start sooner rather than later if you can- every day and month matters! Here are several tips that can help you as you begin the process:

• Try the “backwards hanger” trick. Have you heard this one? You simply turn the hangers around and only change back the ones that you wear. After two or three months, get rid of (donate or sell) any items that you have not worn.
• Set a time goal on your decluttering. If you give yourself one month, for example, you have roughly 30 days and should aim to get rid of 1 item on day 1, 2 items on day 2, 3 items on day 3, and so on. It will really add up and you will be surprised how much lighter you feel when you’re done!
• Take four boxes and label them “donate”, “sell”, “trash” “keep/store” and make sure one item goes in each box every single day.

It can be especially difficult to get rid of sentimental items, even though you know that you can’t keep them in your new home once you move. You can create a memory box that will allow you to keep several of your favorite items in a special place. Using a small box will ensure that it doesn’t take up too much space in your new home. An idea for the items you are attached to but know you can’t keep, you can take photos of the items and will always have the digital memory to look back at! Our last tip for sentimental items is to create a keepsake. For example, if you have a lot of clothing items that hold special memories, you can turn them into a quilt that you can keep close to you.
