New Adventures: Tips for Settling Into (and Loving!) Your New Home

The hard work that comes with moving is finally over… but the to do list still feels endless once you move into your new home. When all you want to do is make your new house feel like home, you can follow these essential steps to start that process:

  1. Clean, clean clean: Before you fully unpack, do a thorough inspection of your new home and check for any damages or issues that need to be addressed right away. Hopefully there are no surprises during this process but be prepared for things to pop up! Clean the space and make it fresh and ready for your belongings.
  2. Unpacking time: Be strategic and unpack room by room, focusing on the essentials first. Think bedding, toiletries and kitchen essentials that you’ll need right away. This will help you settle in faster and feel more comfortable in your new space.
  3. Update your address: If you haven’t already, make sure you notify the post office, banks, utilities and any relevant institutions about your change of address. Arrange for any other services you may need transferred like cable or security systems.
  4. Safety checks: Be sure you check and test smoke detectors, carbon monoxide detectors and security alarms. Familiarize yourself and your family with the layout of your home and locate emergency exits.
  5. Explore: Take some time to explore your new surroundings. Check out nearby amenities such as grocery stores, pharmacies, parks and restaurants. Introduce yourself to neighbors as well!
  6. Arrange your items: Set up your living spaces to create functional and comfortable areas for you and your family. Personalize your home with photos, artwork and other items that make you feel more at home.
  7. Get back into your routines: Establish and get back into existing routines for daily tasks such as meal preparation, laundry and cleaning. This will help you feel more settled and organized in your new home.
  8. R&R: Make sure you take some time for yourself! Moving can be physically and emotionally draining. Take breaks when you need them, stay hydrated and prioritize self-care during this process. It takes time to feel fully “at home” in a new place so be patient with yourself!

By following the above steps, we hope you can ease the transition into your new home and create a welcoming environment where you can begin to build new memories.
