Understanding the moving process is crucial for a smooth and successful transition to your new home. Whether you’re moving within Avon Lake, relocating within the Cleveland area, or moving to or from Avon, being well-informed can save you time, money, and a lot of headaches. Many people enter the moving process with preconceived notions based on what they’ve heard from friends, family, or even outdated online information.

Misconceptions about moving can lead to unnecessary stress, poor planning, and unexpected expenses that could have easily been avoided. When you believe in myths such as the idea that packing can be done at the last minute or that all movers are the same, you may find yourself overwhelmed, underprepared, and scrambling on moving day. These false beliefs can result in damaged belongings, blown budgets, and a chaotic moving experience that leaves you exhausted before you’ve even set foot in your new home.

The 7 Most Common Moving Myths Debunked

Myth 1: All Moving Companies are the Same

Reality: This is one of the most dangerous assumptions you can make when planning your move. Not all movers offer the same level of service, professionalism, or reliability. The moving industry includes everything from highly trained, licensed professionals to unlicensed operators with little experience or accountability. Some companies specialize in local moves, while others excel at long-distance relocations. Some offer full-service packing and storage, while others provide only basic transport.

The quality of customer service, training standards, equipment, and insurance coverage can vary dramatically from one company to another. A reputable moving company will have proper licensing, comprehensive insurance, transparent pricing, and a track record of satisfied customers. On the flip side, choosing the wrong mover can result in damaged belongings, hidden fees, delayed delivery, or even lost items.

Tip: Invest time in researching different companies before making your decision. Read recent reviews on multiple platforms like Google, Yelp, and the Better Business Bureau. Check that the company has proper licensing and insurance coverage. Make sure you talk directly with the team and understand all the details of what you’re signing up for, including their cancellation policy, insurance options, and exactly which services are included in your quote. Don’t be afraid to ask questions about their experience, training procedures, and how they handle damages or disputes.

Myth 2: You Can Pack Everything at the Last Minute

Reality: This myth has probably caused more moving day disasters than any other misconception. Packing takes significantly more time and organization than most people anticipate, especially if you’ve lived in your home for several years. Last-minute packing inevitably leads to poor organization, broken items, forgotten belongings, and extreme stress during an already hectic time.

When you rush through packing, you’re more likely to throw items haphazardly into boxes without proper protection, forget to label boxes clearly, mix items from different rooms, and overlook important documents or valuables. This creates chaos at your destination when you can’t find essential items and discover that fragile belongings didn’t survive the journey.

Tip: Start packing well in advance. We believe it’s NEVER too early to start packing, especially for items you don’t use daily. Begin with seasonal items, decorations, books, and other non-essentials at least 4 to 6 weeks before your move date. Create a realistic timeline to manage your packing efficiently, tackling one room at a time and clearly labeling each box with its contents and destination room. This systematic approach will make unpacking infinitely easier and help you stay organized throughout the entire process.

Myth 3: Moving Yourself is Always Cheaper

Reality: While DIY moving might seem like the most budget-friendly option on the surface, it can end up costing you more than hiring professionals when you factor in hidden expenses and potential risks. DIY moves incur costs like truck rentals, fuel, tolls, packing materials, equipment rentals (dollies, furniture pads), meals for helpers, and potentially time off work.

Beyond the financial costs, there’s also the physical risk of injury from heavy lifting, the potential for damage to your belongings or property (stairs, doorways, walls), and the sheer exhaustion and stress of managing every aspect of the move yourself. Professional movers have the experience, equipment, and insurance to handle your belongings safely and efficiently.

Tip: Take the time to calculate all costs involved in a DIY move versus hiring professionals to see what’s truly more economical for your specific situation. Consider the value of your time, your physical ability to safely move heavy items, and the peace of mind that comes with professional insurance coverage. Often, the cost difference is smaller than you’d expect, and the benefits of professional service far outweigh the savings.

Myth 4: You Can Move During Peak Seasons Without Much Preparation

Reality: The moving industry experiences significant seasonal fluctuations, with the summer months (particularly June, July, and August) being the busiest. During peak season, reputable moving companies book up weeks or even months in advance, and you’ll likely face higher prices due to increased demand. Moving during busy seasons without advance planning can leave you scrambling for last-minute availability, settling for less reliable companies, or paying premium rates.

Additionally, peak-season moves often face challenges such as limited scheduling flexibility, longer wait times for service, and potentially rushed service as companies try to accommodate maximum bookings.

Tip: If possible, plan your move as far in advance as you can (ideally 6 to 8 weeks ahead) to ensure availability with your preferred moving company and secure better rates. Also, moving during off-peak times like fall, winter, or mid-month (if you have the option to) typically offers better rates, more availability, and more personalized attention from your moving team. If you must move during peak season, book early and be prepared to be flexible with your exact moving date to secure the best service.

Myth 5: You Don’t Need to Declutter Before Moving

Reality: Moving everything you own without first sorting through it is a costly mistake many people make. Moving is actually a perfect opportunity to declutter and start fresh in your new space. Taking unnecessary items increases your moving costs (since most movers charge by weight and volume), wastes valuable time packing and unpacking things you don’t need, and clutters your new home with items you’ll eventually get rid of anyway.

Statistics show that people use only about 20% of what they own regularly, which means you’re potentially paying to move items that will sit unused in your new home. Decluttering before your move can significantly reduce your moving expenses and give you a fresh start.

Tip: Start the decluttering process at least a month before your move. Sort through your belongings, room by room, and honestly decide what to keep, donate, sell, or discard. Consider the last time you used each item and whether it serves a purpose in your new home. Host a yard sale, list valuable items online, or donate to local charities. Not only will you reduce moving costs, but you’ll also feel lighter and more organized in your new space.

Myth 6: Packing Materials Are Not Important

Reality: The quality of your packing materials directly impacts the safety of your belongings during transport. Using inadequate, worn-out, or inappropriate packing materials is one of the leading causes of damage during moves. Old boxes that have lost their structural integrity, insufficient padding, improper tape, or the wrong size can all result in broken items, crushed boxes, and belongings arriving damaged at your destination.

Professional-grade packing materials are designed to protect your items during the rigors of moving, including lifting, loading, transport, unloading, and potential stacking. Quality matters, especially for fragile, valuable, or sentimental items.

Tip: Invest in good-quality packing materials, including sturdy boxes in appropriate sizes, bubble wrap, packing paper, heavy-duty tape, and specialty boxes for items like dishes, wardrobes, and artwork. Don’t hesitate to ask your mover for recommendations on the best materials for your specific items. Many moving companies sell or provide packing supplies and can offer expert guidance on protecting your belongings. While it might seem like an extra expense upfront, quality packing materials can save you hundreds or thousands of dollars in replacement costs for damaged items.

Myth 7: Once You Move In, Everything Will Be Perfect

Reality: This myth sets unrealistic expectations that can lead to disappointment and frustration. The truth is that settling into a new home takes time, patience, and adjustment. It’s completely normal for your new space to feel chaotic, unfamiliar, and overwhelming during the first few weeks. Expect some level of disorganization during the unpacking and organizing phase as you figure out where everything should go and how best to use your new space.

Beyond the physical unpacking, there’s also an emotional adjustment period as you adapt to new surroundings, routines, neighbors, and possibly a new community. It can take several months to truly feel at home in a new place.

Tip: Give yourself grace during the transition period and focus on unpacking essential items first: bedding, toiletries, kitchen basics, and important documents. Don’t pressure yourself to have everything perfectly organized within the first week. Take your time making decorating decisions, and give yourself permission to live in the space for a while before making major changes. Remember, creating a home is a gradual process, and it’s okay for it to take time for your new space to feel truly like yours.
